(Vil du fortelja om mor di si tru om kokande vatn?)
Ja, det kan eg. Det var annleis før i tida når me kokte poeteter . Då var det svært vanleg å koka potetene med skalet på, og så gjekk dei ut og slo vatnet av dei ned på bakken, veit du. Men så sa ho at det skulle me ikkje gjera. Så ville me vita kvifor me ikkjee skulle gjera det, og så lo me av det. ”Ja, de får no gjera som de vil,”sa ho, ”men eg held no på det at eg ikkje skal gjera det. Og ikkje har eg gjort det heller. Ein skal ikkje slå kokande vatn på jorda, for då brenne du dei som er innunder,” sa ho. Det skulle vera huldrefolket det, veit du, som innunder.

Opptak frå 10.nov 1942.Informan: Denne gamle kvinna er fødd i Aurland i Sogn i 1859. Ho er svært klar og informativ både om dei første bureisingsåra og om folketru frå Noreg. Ho immigrerte i 1870.

Underground People
(Will you tell something about yours mother’s belief concerning boiling wartet? Yes I can do. It was different then, you know: when we boiled potatoes, as I used to be i former times, it wasquite common to boil them with their skins on, aand they went out and poured the water off them, on grround. And than she said that we shouldn’t do that. Then we wanted to know why we shouldn’t do it, you know, and we laught at this.
”Well you can do as you please,” she said,”but as for me,”she said,”I’m not going to do it, and I haven’t done it either,”She said. ”One shouldn’t pour boiling water on the ground, for then one burns those who are underneath,” she saaid. That was supposed to be the ’huldre’ people, you know, who were underneath.

Recorded 10. Nov. 1942. Informant: born in Aurland, Sogn, in 1859; this old woman was remarkably clear and informative about the early days of settlement as well as the belifs carried over from Norway. She immigrated in 1870.
